Yearly Orientation for Parents of Piano Students – Tomorrow!

Here at UPC, we know that our piano students do their best work when they’re supported by great piano parents. We like to think of piano lessons as a triangle: When all three are working together, the sky’s the limit! But as a parent, whether you play the piano or not, it can be hard to know exactly how to help your child best. You may have questions such as: What should my child’s practicing look like at home? How much is my child expected to practice? What is my role in my child’s practice? What kinds of things is my child learning at piano lessons? How can I keep...

A Parent’s Place in Piano Lessons

On September 14th, we are hosting our annual parent involvement meeting! At Utah Piano Conservatory, parent involvement is crucial. “Parents are encouraged to be active participants in their student(s)’ progress” (UPC 2017-2018 Handbook, pg. 4). We are very excited to gather parents of our students together in this meeting, and look forward to seeing all of our piano parents there! “Parents are also required to attend the yearly conservatory parent meeting . . . . in preparation for a new academic year”. As part of this meeting, “parents agree to ensure...

Summer Program Piano Concerts

Both of our summer piano lessons programs were a great success! Both programs ended with concerts, so we wanted to share the recordings! The JumpStart Piano Camp was our week-long intensive camp for beginners. At the end of the week, family members came for a fun monster concert in the piano gallery downstairs, where each student had the chance to play in groups and as a solo performer. This was a laid-back performance but tons of fun! Our second summer program was for piano students with a little more experience. These students worked on duet (one piano, four hands) and duo (two pianos,...

Piano Duo Performance – Next Friday Night!

Please join us next Friday, July 7, for an evening of fantastic piano duets and two-piano works! The Delgado-Mauler duo (Tiffany Delgado and Hillary Mauler) will be performing a free concert at 7 PM in our very own Concerto hall. Ms. Delgado and Ms. Mauler have been performing together since 2013 and have since won national and international competitions together. This summer, they’re also teaching team piano lessons as part of our 2017 Summer Duet program and we couldn’t be more excited to have them here! Check out this video of them performing at BYU commencement in 2013: This...

When Should I Put My Child in Piano Lessons?

I want to put my child in piano lessons, you think, but I’m just not sure if this is the right time!  Knowing when to put your child in lessons can be tricky! If you feel that your child is mentally and physically ready (find the 6 questions you need to answer first here), when is the best time of year to start? Well, while there’s no time like the present, we think summer is an ESPECIALLY good time to start piano. Some teachers (and parents) stop lessons during the summer, but we find that teaching all year round helps our students to make much better progress overall. (Look at...

How Piano Recitals Can Instill Confidence

How Piano Recitals Can Instill Confidence

At Piano Academy, we focus on a different virtue each month. Called “Virtues for Virtuoso’s”, this emphasis helps students to develop both talent and testimony. At piano lessons, our students aren’t just learning the notes, they are learning patience. They aren’t just learning the rhythms, they are learning dedication. This month’s virtue is confidence! While preparing for our recitals, our program coordinator had an idea that I believe will be a confidence-boost to many of our students. Lindsay Bastian, the Orange Piano Academy Solo Teacher and Program...
