Christmas Music from Piano Academy

For as long as I can remember, the rule in my house growing up was that Christmas decorations went up the day after Thanksgiving. While some of us kids got grumpy about it once in a while (sorry, Mom), we all helped to put together the Christmas tree, add lights and ornaments, and place other various decorations around the house. But the thing that always came out of the box first was the Christmas music! It didn’t feel like Christmas until we were dancing and singing to “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.” Although I haven’t been home for the decorating part for...

Practice Competition 2018: 30-Day Sight-Reading Challenge

Every so often at the Piano Academy, we have some kind of practice-focused event (like our PianOlympics or this practice competition) to help keep practicing fun and engaging for our piano students. This year’s event will come in the form of a sight-reading challenge! For the month of January, students are encouraged to take the SASR as many times as possible. (Not familiar with the SASR? Compliment Cards: A New Piano Recital Tradition

Recitals last weekend were SO much fun! We had almost 70 students perform, as well as several of our piano teachers. We heard lots of amazing performances – but today we want to share something we did a little differently this time around: compliment cards! We got this idea from a fellow teacher (click here to read her original post) and had so much fun with it. The idea is for each students and parent to write a quick note or two to other performers at the recital sharing what they liked about their piece or performance. We had each student write to the person who played before them;...

Piano Lessons Facilitate Family Musical Experiences

If you are familiar with the story of how Utah Piano Conservatory came to be, you will know that one motivating factor behind the conservatory is “Facilitating Positive Musical Experiences for Families”.  Our director and her family have chosen music lessons as the tool to help their family develop talents and important qualities. Piano families at Utah Piano Conservatory are encouraged to do the same. We have seen, especially recently, that our conservatory families are creating positive musical experiences by performing together! At our most recent recitals, both last Saturday,...
