Carol Cherry began piano lessons at the age of 4 years old. She passed up her first teacher at the age of 8. She studied with Carroll Meyer at Boise State, and won her first concerto competition in 6th grade. As a senior in high school, she took first place in the state piano concerto competition, and performed with several symphonies. At BYU, she studied with Paul Pollei for two piano performance degrees and also played for the program bureau.

She married into a military lifestyle. While in Germany, there were hundreds of children who wanted to take piano lessons, but she was the only English-speaking teacher on the base at that time. She would teach 40 students for 3 months, then change to another group for the next 3 months, and so forth. This went on for over 2 years.

When she arrived back in the states, she wondered if there was any way to teach many students at the same time and still keep the level of teaching at the highest quality. She tried out 6 different types of piano academy styles when stationed at different military bases until she perfected the current one.

Her Olympia Piano Academy had 180 students and over 20 on the waiting list when the Music Teachers National Association took notice. They featured her studio on video at one of the MTNA national conventions over 20 years ago. After 51 years of teaching, she retired last July 2014 in Utah, with a smaller studio of 108 piano students. She had learned to put the emphasis on preparing advanced students for majoring in piano performance in college, while still creating an exceptional and fun learning environment for students still in the progressive series.

Many of her students have won full 4-year piano scholarships to the universities of their choice, and a few have won national contests.

Teaching piano has been a lifetime of joy for her.
